Educational Games: Uno Card Game
70How Uno Can Be Used as an Educational Game
Did you know that the popular card game Uno can be educational for
children? While this card game is great for parties, gatherings, and
sleepovers, it can also teach children a few different topics. Think
about it. Colors, numbers, matching, sequencing, and directions are all
used in this game. So get out the deck of Uno cards and turn this card
game into a nice fun learning session! Let's take a look at how Uno can
be used as an educational game for children.
Learn About Colors!
Uno is a card game that is full of colors! During the game, players will
switch off between red, blue, yellow, and green. Players can also
change the color that is in play with a Wild or Draw Four card. As the
colors constantly change, children will be able to learn and identify
each of the four colors. You can let your child know what each color is
at the beginning of the game. Whenever someone changes the color in the
game, ask your child to identify the current color in play. The player
usually announces the colors when using a Wild or Draw Four card. If
your child is not the player, you can still ask him or her to repeat the
color that is now in play. This will help them to remember the color.
Learn About Numbers!
Almost every Uno card in a deck has a number between one and nine on it.
Use the card to teach children how to identify each number. Every so
often during the game, you can ask your child to say the number out loud
on the card he or she has now put down. If possible, try to get them to
say most (if not all) of the numbers at least twice. The Draw Two and
Draw Four cards may not always be fun for those who must draw the cards,
but they can certainly be helpful in teaching. Whenever your child is
asked to draw two or four cards, have them count each card as they pick
it up. You can also ask them to count the cards whenever someone else is
asked to draw two or four cards. This way they are learning how to both
identify numbers and count.
Learn About Matching!
Uno is also a good game to play when teaching matching. There are two
ways to teach matching in this game. The first way is by matching the
colors. Let's say the color in play is red. Your child would need to put
down a red card. By doing this, your child will be matching two cards
of the same color.
The other way to teach matching is to use the numbers on the card.
Unless you draw a Wild or Draw Four card, you cannot change the color in
play without a matching number. For example, the last card to be put
down may be a yellow three. If your child has a green three, then he or
she can put it down to change the color to green. This will help
children learn how to match two cards of the same number. In addition,
it will also teach them the difference between two colors.
Learn About Putting Things in Order!
All Uno decks include Reverse and Skip cards. These two cards can be
helpful when teaching children the putting things in order. Children
will learn what each word means, and they will see it put into action!
When a Reverse card is used, the order in which the players take a turn
is Reversed. So children will see that the word "Reverse" means to go in
the opposite direction (this is also great for teaching them about
opposites). When a Skip card is used, the next player loses his or her
next turn. So children will see that "Skip" means to pass over something
or someone. This can be a fun way to learn the definition of those two
words.
Learn About Following Directions!
Playing the game of Uno does require the following of directions. They
are simple directions, but they are still useful when teaching children.
Players will have to take turns, draw two or four cards, lose a turn,
and of course shout out "Uno" before putting down the last game. These
directions are necessary for playing the game correctly. Not only will
children learn how to play the game of Uno, they will also learn how to
follow simple directions as well.
Learn How To Be A Good Sport.
Just like most games, Uno will only have one winner. If your child
happens to be the winner, encourage them to remain kind to the other
players instead of rubbing it in. If your child does not win the game,
encourage them to congratulate the winner and move on to the next game.
You should also be sure none of the players cheat during the game in any
way. This will teach children how to play fair with others and be a
good sport.
Now that you have learned how Uno can be used as an educational game for
children, put this game to the test! Play a game of Uno with your child
while teaching them their colors, numbers, counting, and more! If you
have more than one child, let everyone join in on the fun! This can also
include other relatives and your child's friends. Uno is a card game
that can be played home, school classrooms, and child care centers.
Mixing together a game like Uno with learning will make the experience
enjoyable for both children and adults.
