Small Pets for Kids
67Are you thinking about getting your child his or her very own small pet? Small pets are a great way to introduce children to pet care. They are a little easier to take care of and will let children get a feel of what it is like to own and take care of a pet. Small pets can range from small dogs and hamsters to fish. Here are a few small pets for kids to keep in mind when buying your little one a pet.
When you think of small pets for children, cats may be one of the first animals to come to mind. There are two choices on picking a cat for your child. The first choice would be to get a kitten instead of an adult cat. This way your child and the kitten will get used to each other at a young age and grow together. Another option is to get an adult cat, but you should find out if the cat is friendly towards children before bringing the cat home. You should also find out if the cat is up to date with his or her vaccines, is trained to use the cat liter, and whether or not there are any health problems.
You may decide to get your child his or her own dog. There are a few small dogs that are good with children, including Beagles, Bichon Frise, Poodle, Shih Tzu, and Pugs. Just like with getting a cat, you can also get a puppy to grow with your child. You can also get an adult dog, but make sure the dog is small and great with children. Once again (just like with cats), you should find out if the dog is up to date with his or her vaccines, is house trained, and whether or not there are any health problems.
Maybe you are not ready for your child to have a cat or small dog yet. There are other small pet for kids you can consider. How about getting your child his or her own fish? You can start off with one goldfish and eventually add more (to that tank or another tank). The fish you will add will depend on how they are to be taken care of, whether or not they need a new tank, and what kind of fish you can find. It will also depend on what kind of fish your child is interested in. Keep in mind that just because a fish does not need to be walked or taken to the vet for vaccines does not mean it does not care. You still have to feed the fish and keep the tank clean. When you purchase your fish, be sure to get all of the information you need on taking care of it. This includes feeding it (what to feed it and how much), cleaning the tank, and whether or not it can stay in a tank with other fish. Be sure to pass this information on to your child.
Hamsters and gerbils are two other options for getting your child a small pet. They are small, furry, and loved by children. While these two pets do have their similarities, you should be sure to get all of the information on each one before purchasing it. You need to know what to feed each one, what kind of cage and area it should live in, and how to clean the cage. If you are buying both a hamster and a gerbil, then you should keep them in separate (but labeled) cages. This will not only prevent them from fighting, but it will also prevent your child from getting them mixed up as well. You can find food for both hamsters and gerbils from different brands (be sure to read the package to make sure you buy the right food for the right animal). Hamsters and gerbils may use similar cages, tubes, and toys, but you should specify to the store clerk what kind of animal you are buying the items for before actually buying them.
Whenever you decide to buy a pet for your child and the household in general, you should be sure to do a little research before actually buying and bringing it home. Find out what kind of pet care each one needs and what supplies you will need to get. You will also need to figure out which pet is best suited for your home and family. Some homes may be good for a gerbil, but not for a dog. Other homes may have family members that are allergic to cat hair. But then there are some homes that can take in just about any pet. Of course you will also need to see which pet is the better to bring around your children as well. If your child may be too rough with a dog, then maybe a fish is a better choice for a first pet. This will all depend on the animal, children, and household in general. There are a few pets for kids to choose from, and you are sure to find one that will be a great addition to your family!
